Synopsis

Brendan (Robbie Coltrane), a porter at the Dublin Medical Centre is plagued with financial strains and a gambler's sordid past. However, never one to crumble or even falter under stress, Brendan has a plan. He has found a "golden goose"; an alliance with a hidden talent sequestered deep within the archives of the college may provide the Midas touch Brendan so desperately needs. This source has an uncanny knack for picking the winning horse at the local races.

But with the domestic strife which ensued from his last 'sure thing' he keeps away from having a flutter himself while he shares his information with several others at the college - including the Senior Anatomist (Dan Aykroyd). But when his daughter's future depends on money to go to college he breaks the promise he made to his wife Deirdre (Brenda Blethyn) and joins in. All are gearing the future of their financial and emotional well being around outwitting the local bookies and beating the odds.

They aren't the only ones who are on to this scheme. Standing foursquare in their way is a diplomat Michael (Tony Briggs) whose mission is to set to right colonial misdeeds. Brendan and his colleagues need one last win to set their worlds to rights - the "golden goose" is about to be snatched from them. A battle of wits and wiles ensues to try to ensure that their win happens.
